How do you
keep their coat so clean?
The Japanese Spitz have a 'Non stick Teflon'
type of coat, which allows the mud and dirt to fall of when it
dries.
(20-30 minutes in a warm environment, the mud drops off). They
only need to be bathed twice a year, which is usually enough,
they do not have a doggy odor.
They are a double coated dog, and need only be combed
a couple of times a week, they like to be clean, and you can see
them cleaning themselves like a cat. They also
do not need clipping or plucking. The male will usually shed his
coat once a year as the female will shed twice
a year. At which time you should brush your dog twice
a day to help new coat to grow. You should not bath your dog often,
twice a year should be enough. Most people are not allergic to
the hair as they would with most other
double-coated breeds.

Do they need
a lot of exercise?
This is totally up to you - they like frequent
walks, for
socialization, and like playing with other dogs, as long as
you spend time with them, even in the house - just being
around you they are content. If you like walking or jogging they
would love to go with you.
They are always trying to please you, and want
to be near you. They can jump high fences and gates,
so their enclosure needs to be at least
1.5m to 1.8m high.
Are
they a family dog?
They are most definitely a family dog, they
thrive on
human companionship, they are a very intelligent breed.
Always eager to please, in temperament, it is wary of
complete strangers, rushing up to them without formal introductions.
They prefer the gentle approach,
after that you have a friend for life.
They are characterized by their great courage, intelligence and
liveliness, and being very affectionate
and devoted companion. It is most definitely a family dog -
a young puppy (3-12 months) could be a handful for children under
five, without adult supervision,
they make a loving companion for a single person
in a flat. They usually live approx. 14-17 years.
They are not heavily built, so don't
knock over frail elderly people or small children.
Are
they easy to train?
They are very intelligent and very easy to
train.
But they do not train themselves, as long as you are consistent
they learn quickly and are always eager to please you. Between
3 and 9 months of age any puppy requires a high level of socialization.
